Nokia expands Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync availability

Nokia today announced that it is expanding its device range which enables Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync to all Nokia S60 3rd Edition devices. 43 Nokia devices will now feature the Mail for Exchange mobile email application, making Nokia's device range the largest ever to enable the solution chosen by more businesses than any other messaging solution. Nokia also announced today that Mail for Exchange will be available out-of-the-box in future releases of Nokia Eseries and Nokia Nseries devices.

With this announcement, Nokia is enabling about 80 million* mobile phone users - which is the number of Nokia S60 3rd Edition converged devices shipped globally to date - to connect to their email accounts on the Exchange Server.

Nokia owners whose companies use Exchange can set up Mail for Exchange for free on their devices in various ways without paying additional services or subscription fees - from the email set-up plug-in on the home screen, by launching the application from the Download! folder, or via the Settings Wizard**. Once the application is set up, users utilize their current data plan service to get real-time access to their office email, calendar, contacts, tasks and company directory over a secure connection.

"We take corporate and IT security policies seriously, and a comparison study showed that the device management and security policies for devices such as the Nokia Eseries are robust," added Mr Vanjoki. "This should give business heads and IT managers greater confidence when choosing between device brands to mobilize their workforce."

By connecting to the Exchange Server 2007, Mail for Exchange enables features such as Autodiscover, which drastically simplifies the set-up process by requiring the email account holder to only enter their email address, password, domain and usernames; 'Out of Office' messaging, enabling busy professionals to set their out-of-office messages directly from their Nokia device; synchronization when roaming, a must-have feature for travelling businesspeople; and also Flag status for follow-ups.

While the Exchange ActiveSync protocol is compatible with many types of devices, Nokia device users will have access to features that are currently not available in other Exchange ActiveSync licensees' devices. Sony Ericsson launches limited edition cell phone

Sony Ericsson Tuesday unveiled the C902 cybershot phone Titanium silver edition to coincide with the upcoming James Bond film 'Quantum of Solace'.

The C902, which is the company's trademark cybershot phone featuring a five-megapixel camera, is used by popular film character Bond in the upcoming movie.

The phone will cost Rs.20,995 in the Indian market.

This isn't the first time Sony has used virtual marketing to promote its product. Casino Royale, which marked Daniel Craig's debut as James Bond, showcased an array of Sony products right from its Vaio range of laptops, digital cameras and mobile phones.

Vesper Lynd, who according to the story was Bond's first and last love interest but actually was a double agent working with Mr. White - the film's villain representing the Quantum Organization - also used a Sony Ericsson phone.

In the recently released Batman movie - The Dark Knight - Nokia too used the strategy to showcase their upcoming Tube mobile phone, which will be the Finnish major's new full touch screen mobile phone.

The phones weighs Size 107 grams and is 108 mm long. With a built in memory of 60 MB which can be extended using a memory card, the phone has a screen size of two inches. The limited Titanium edition will come pre-loaded with Bond ring tones and wallpapers.

Vodafone to Offer Pricey IPhone 3G in India

The iPhone 3G from Apple will be available in India from August 22 through Vodafone, but it comes at a hefty price of 31,000 Indian rupees (US$715) for an 8G-byte flash drive model.

The price at which Vodafone is offering the phone will ensure that the iPhone 3G will not become a mass-market device in India. AT&T is offering the 8G-byte model at $199 in the US, bundled with a two-year contract. In the future, the company may offer a no-commitment option of $599 for 8G bytes and $699 for 16G bytes, it said.

Vodafone Essar, Vodafone's joint venture in India, had kept under wraps the date when it would launch the iPhone 3G in India and its price. Competitor Bharti Airtel announced that the phone would be available August 22 but has not yet disclosed the price.

Vodafone Essar has, however, put on its Website the availability and pricing of the iPhone 3G at http://www.vodafone.in/iphone/Pages/iPhone_details.aspx?cid=kar. The company has also mentioned on the site that customers for the iPhone 3G who are not Vodafone customers will have to first sign up for Vodafone mobile service.

The iPhone 3G with 16G bytes of memory will sell for 36,100 rupees, the company said on its Web site. Vodafone Essar was not immediately available for comment.

An Apple spokeswoman said earlier this month that music and video downloads from Apple's iTunes music store would not be available to Indian customers, though customers will be able to download applications from the App Store.

Both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone have cautioned on their Web sites that the iPhone on launch in India will not be offered on 3G networks, and some of the features of the iPhone 3G will not be immediately available.

The Indian government has announced plans for the auction of 3G spectrum this year, and the commercial roll out of 3G services is expected in the first half of next year.

The battle for the hearts, minds and wallets of mobile phone owners enters a new phase this weekend with the launch of the BlackBerry Bold.

RIM, the Canadian company behind the BlackBerry, the mobile email device beloved of businessmen and travelling salesmen, is making a concerted effort to appeal to a much wider audience - ordinary people, like you and me, rather than hedge fund managers and captains of industry - and the Bold is its most ambitious attempt yet.

The sleek, stylish phone has all the classic BlackBerry hallmarks - from the qwerty keyboard for tapping out emails to the capacity to open and edit documents - but it's also one of the best entertainment devices BlackBerry has produced, with a really good music player and the ability to show videos on the crisp, clear screen.

BlackBerry has had to raise its game following Apple's entry into the mobile phone market with the iPhone - the newest version, the iPhone 3G, hit shops last month. The Apple has been, by and large, a critical and commercial success. It has also raised the bar in terms of public expectations.

At its heart, the iPhone is an iPod, so it's got music and video playback pretty much licked. It's also a fantastic tool for surfing the web, because it operates on both the high-speed 3G mobile phone network and in wireless hotspots, and the touch-screen interface means people can view web pages as they would on a normal computer.

It means that other mobile phone manufacturers have had to think much more carefully about the user experience. The Bold has been designed with this almost entirely in mind: loading music for instance, has been made really easy - it will pull songs straight from your existing iTunes library; surfing the web is more satisfying than on other BlackBerrys, because the Bold uses the 3G mobile phone network as well as Wi-Fi to get online; and the interface has been given a makeover.

For once, the "iPhone killer" moniker given to every half-decent new phone these days seems to be almost entirely justified in the case of the Bold. But which should you plump for? Before you decide, read our department-by-department reviews on this page.

Camera and GPS

iPhone 3g:The two-megapixel camera is basic but produces images of acceptable quality. Using the built-in GPS and Google Maps to get around is easy, but the current system is not quite fast enough to support real-time turn-by-turn directions. The satnav software can "tag" a photo with the geographical coordinates where it was taken.

BlackBerry Bold: The Bold has the same two-megapixel camera as the iPhone and can also "geotag" your photographs. The GPS function is very easy to use, and you can install additional software to turn the Bold into a useful sat-nav device, capable of providing turn-by-turn directions.

Email

iPhone 3g: The iPhone can collect emails as soon as they hit your computer inbox. Setting up a connection to my work email account took 90 seconds. The iPhone loses marks, however, for lacking some high‑end business functions; you can open, but not edit, Excel spreadsheets and Word documents, for instance. Typing on the virtual keyboard takes some getting used to.

BlackBerry Bold: The full-sized keyboard means that you can type long emails comfortably, and you can open and edit documents with applications such as "Word to Go". Connecting to corporate email accounts is straightforward (assuming you've been set up by your company to do so). You can also connect the Bold to your computer and use it as a modem.

Lookd and usability

iPhone 3g: Sleek, sexy, dramatic and minimalist, the iPhone has good looks in spades. While not everyone will get along with the touch-screen interface, especially for typing, it really comes into its own when browsing the web or flicking through music, photos and videos.

BlackBerry Bold: The Bold looks sleek and stylish, and the keyboard is superb for typing. But that's the problem - the iPhone, quite simply, looks better because it doesn't have all those buttons on the front. When it comes to usability for business, however, the Bold is streets ahead.

The free MediaSync software will pull music and playlists on to the device from iTunes, although it will not work with copy-protected files bought through the iTunes store, for instance. The Bold has 1GB of memory built in, but you can increase this to 8GB using a memory card.

Overall view

iPhone 3g: If the iPhone had the ability to edit documents on the go, it would be the perfect business device. As it stands, it is probably better suited to consumers, but its ease of use, superb multimedia capabilities and the ability to add software make it one of the best all-round handsets on the market.

BlackBerry Bold: The BlackBerry Bold, quite simply, does more than the iPhone. It looks better than any of its predecessors, too, but email and professional uses are always going to be the priorities for this device. If they're your priority as well, then it's a superb machine - carrying it says you mean business.

Samsung announced its latest all-touch smartphone, the Samsung Omnia i900, powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 and Samsung's TouchWiz interface. Sporting a 3.2-inch screen with a Wide QVGA resolution (240 by 400 pixels), the Samsung Omnia i900 offers both business and multimedia features.

The Samsung Omnia i900 operates on Quad-band GSM/EDGE and European HSDPA (7.2 Mbps) networks, but an American version may be announced later this year. Unlike most TouchWiz phones to date, the Samsung Omnia i900 comes with an integrated GPS radio, enabling GPS navigation.

The Samsung Omnia i900 offers a range of multimedia features, including a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and face detection, as well as support for DivX, XviD, H.263, H.264 WMV and MP4 video files. The Samsung Omnia i900 will be available in 8GB and 16GB models, and a microSD slot supporting up to 16GB cards allows for further memory expansion.
